Cara and I spent three weeks in a small fishing village in Sumatra, where we became part of the local community and the incredible project team.

From the moment we arrived, everyone involved in the project made us feel welcome and ensured we had an unforgettable experience. Whether it was exploring more of Sumatra, enjoying live music in the evenings, or sharing delicious local meals together, we quickly felt at home.

Each morning at 8:30am, we rode a motorbike to the local primary school to help teach English to the village children. Every day we were welcomed with huge smiles and so much enthusiasm.

We helped the children learn new English words while they taught us some Bahasa Indonesia in return. In the afternoons, we joined the other volunteers at the local kids centre, where learning happened through games, creativity and fun.

The children would come along whenever they wanted, and their excitement and gratitude made every day special. We played games, danced, swam together and shared countless memorable moments.

We also helped paint a new classroom that was being built to create a dedicated space where children could learn, explore and develop their skills. This classroom is the first step towards the goal of building a full school in the future.

We met so many kind and inspiring children who deserve every opportunity to succeed. We hope we were able to make even a small difference, and that future volunteers will continue building on the work already started.
