We spent four months travelling around Southeast Asia, and volunteering in Vietnam was easily one of the highlights of the entire trip. It gave us a completely different experience to normal backpacking and let us see a side of Vietnam we never would have otherwise.
We got involved in so many different parts of local life, from helping out on farms and getting our hands dirty to spending time with foster kids in the community. It wasn’t about ticking off tourist attractions. We were actually meeting people, learning how they lived and feeling like we were part of the community for a while.
After months of moving from place to place as backpackers, having that deeper connection to one place and its people was something really special. It ended up being one of those experiences we talked about long after we left.
